Directed by Claude Lanzmann, After Shoah brings together four films developed from interviews and historical material connected with his landmark documentary work. Each film focuses on a particular witness, event or moral question, preserving testimony that remains essential to understanding the Holocaust and its aftermath.
A Visitor from the Living examines the testimony of Maurice Rossel, who visited the Theresienstadt ghetto during the war. Sobibór, October 14, 1943, 4 P.M. recounts the prisoner uprising at the Sobibór extermination camp through the testimony of survivor Yehuda Lerner.
The Karski Report presents further testimony from Jan Karski, who attempted to alert Allied leaders to the destruction of European Jewry. The Last of the Unjust centres on Benjamin Murmelstein, the final Jewish elder of Theresienstadt, and explores profoundly difficult questions surrounding survival, responsibility and moral compromise under Nazi persecution.
Together, these films form a serious and deeply human documentary collection about witness, remembrance and the responsibility to preserve historical truth.
