All About Eve DVD
A brilliantly sharp drama of theatrical ambition, ageing and manipulation, led by one of Bette Davis’s most commanding and unforgettable performances.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the rivalries, vulnerability and discipline hidden behind a performance. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for intelligent dialogue, formidable actors and films that looked beyond the glamour of the stage to the ambition and insecurity underneath.
Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, All About Eve stars Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a celebrated Broadway actress whose confidence begins to falter as she confronts the expectations placed upon an ageing female star.
Into Margo’s life comes Eve Harrington, played by Anne Baxter, an apparently devoted young admirer who waits outside the theatre each evening hoping for a glimpse of her idol.
Moved by Eve’s story and quiet admiration, Margo’s friend Karen introduces her backstage. Eve quickly makes herself indispensable, becoming Margo’s assistant and gaining the trust of the people closest to her.
Yet beneath Eve’s modest manner lies an ambition far greater than anyone initially suspects. As she moves closer to Margo’s roles, relationships and position within the theatre, admiration becomes imitation and loyalty gives way to carefully calculated betrayal.
George Sanders delivers a wonderfully controlled performance as cynical theatre critic Addison DeWitt, one of the few people capable of recognising Eve’s strategy because he understands ambition just as clearly as she does.
Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe and Thelma Ritter complete an exceptional ensemble, while Marilyn Monroe appears in an early supporting role.
Mankiewicz’s screenplay is filled with elegant insults, perfectly judged observations and conversations in which every courteous word may conceal rivalry, fear or resentment. The world of theatre becomes the setting for a wider examination of fame, ageing and the relentless desire to be seen.
An essential addition for collectors of classic Hollywood, Bette Davis performances and sophisticated dramas filled with ambition, jealousy and some of cinema’s sharpest dialogue.
