All About Eve DVD
Bette Davis stars in a sharp and sophisticated drama about theatrical ambition, ageing, manipulation and the rivalry hidden behind polite smiles.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, All About Eve stars Bette Davis as Margo Channing, a celebrated Broadway actress confronting the pressures and insecurities that come with ageing in the public eye.
Into Margo's life comes Eve Harrington, played by Anne Baxter, an apparently devoted young admirer who is introduced backstage and quickly makes herself indispensable.
As Eve gains the trust of the people around Margo, admiration gradually begins to look more like calculation. Her ambitions extend far beyond friendship as she moves closer to Margo's roles, relationships and place within the theatre.
George Sanders gives a wonderfully controlled performance as theatre critic Addison DeWitt, while Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Thelma Ritter and Marilyn Monroe add further depth to the ensemble.
Mankiewicz's screenplay is filled with elegant put-downs, rivalry and conversations where almost every courteous remark carries something sharper underneath.
A brilliantly written classic Hollywood drama driven by ambition, jealousy and one of Bette Davis's most memorable performances.
