American Gigolo DVD

Richard Gere stars in Paul Schrader's stylish crime drama about a man whose carefully controlled life begins to unravel when he becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

From Dad's Collection

This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.

Written and directed by Paul Schrader, American Gigolo stars Richard Gere as Julian Kaye, a highly paid escort whose confidence and carefully maintained image allow him to move easily through wealthy Los Angeles circles.

Julian treats seduction as a profession built on discretion, discipline and control. His clothes, apartment, car and relationships all form part of the polished identity he has created for himself.

That control begins to disappear after a woman connected to one of his appointments is found murdered and the police start treating Julian as their principal suspect.

As evidence appears to gather around him, the people who once relied on his discretion become unwilling to risk themselves on his behalf. His confident world narrows into fear and isolation as he begins to suspect that he has been deliberately framed.

Lauren Hutton plays Michelle Stratton, whose relationship with Julian becomes increasingly important as his independence and certainty begin to collapse.

A sleek psychological crime drama about image, loneliness and the fragility of a life built around control and appearance.
