American History X DVD
Edward Norton stars in a powerful drama about racism, radicalisation, violence and the difficult consequences of trying to leave hatred behind.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Tony Kaye, American History X stars Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, an intelligent but deeply angry young man who becomes involved with a violent white supremacist group.
Following the murder of his father, Derek allows grief and resentment to harden into hatred. His beliefs bring him status and influence among other extremists, while his younger brother Danny, played by Edward Furlong, begins to follow the same path.
Derek's violence eventually leads to imprisonment, where experiences that challenge his certainty force him to confront the beliefs and behaviour that once defined him.
When he returns home, Derek finds Danny increasingly drawn into the same ideology. He tries to prevent his brother from repeating his mistakes while facing the damage already caused to his family and the people around him.
Edward Norton gives an intense performance that keeps Derek's transformation difficult and uncomfortable, while the film remains focused on the destructive effects of racism, extremism and violence.
A hard-hitting social drama about hatred being learned, reinforced and passed from one person to another, and the consequences that remain even when someone tries to change.
