American History X DVD
A powerful and deeply unsettling drama examining how hatred takes hold, how violence spreads through families and communities, and whether a person can escape the beliefs that once defined them.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the responsibility involved in portraying difficult people and painful subjects without reducing them to something simple. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for fearless performances, serious social drama and films willing to confront the consequences of prejudice and violence.
Directed by Tony Kaye, American History X stars Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, an intelligent but deeply angry young man who becomes a prominent figure within a violent white supremacist group.
Following the murder of his father, Derek allows grief and resentment to harden into hatred. His beliefs bring him status and influence among other extremists, while his younger brother Danny, played by Edward Furlong, begins viewing him as someone to admire and imitate.
Derek’s violence eventually leads to imprisonment. Inside, the certainty that once shaped his identity begins to break down as he experiences betrayal, brutality and an unexpected friendship that forces him to question everything he previously believed.
When Derek returns home, he discovers that Danny has followed the same path. Determined to prevent his brother from repeating his mistakes, he attempts to undo years of influence while facing the people and organisations he once supported.
The film moves between past and present, gradually revealing how racism, family loss, manipulation and personal responsibility have shaped both brothers. Its structure allows earlier events to be reconsidered as Derek’s understanding of himself begins to change.
Edward Norton gives an intense and physically commanding performance that never allows Derek’s transformation to feel simple or comfortable. Edward Furlong brings vulnerability to Danny, while Beverly D’Angelo, Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Avery Brooks and Elliott Gould complete the supporting cast.
This is not an easy film, nor is it intended to be. It confronts racism and extremist violence directly while examining the damage caused when hatred is taught, repeated and allowed to become part of a person’s identity.
A significant addition for collectors of serious American drama, Edward Norton performances and uncompromising films examining racism, radicalisation, consequence and the difficult possibility of change.
