BlacKkKlansman Blu-ray Spike Lee John David Washington
Spike Lee’s gripping, darkly funny and fiercely relevant crime drama, inspired by the extraordinary true story of a Black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who appreciated films that could entertain while still confronting difficult truths. His collection reflected a lifelong interest in fearless filmmaking, outstanding performances and stories that challenged audiences to examine the society around them.
Directed by Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, the first Black police officer to serve in the Colorado Springs Police Department.
Determined to prove himself within a department where he already faces prejudice, Ron responds to a newspaper advertisement placed by the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Speaking to its members by telephone, he successfully convinces them that he shares their racist ideology and begins an extraordinary undercover investigation.
Because Ron cannot attend Klan meetings in person, fellow detective Flip Zimmerman, played by Adam Driver, assumes Ron’s identity during face-to-face encounters. The two men must maintain one carefully constructed persona while navigating suspicion, escalating danger and the possibility of violent extremist activity.
As Ron builds a telephone relationship with Klan leader David Duke, portrayed by Topher Grace, Flip is drawn deeper into a group whose hatred becomes increasingly threatening. Their investigation also intersects with Ron’s relationship with student activist Patrice Dumas, played by Laura Harrier, whose distrust of the police forces him to confront the contradictions within his own position.
Spike Lee moves between suspense, satire and anger without reducing the seriousness of the subject. Moments of absurdity expose the ignorance behind racist ideology, while the danger facing its targets remains immediate and painfully real.
Inspired by Ron Stallworth’s memoir, the film connects its 1970s setting to the continuing presence of racism and organised extremism in modern America, making its final scenes especially forceful.
A powerful sealed Blu-ray for collectors of Spike Lee’s work, true-story crime dramas and bold filmmaking that combines remarkable performances with a message that continues to matter.
