Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how tension could be created through pauses, glances and conversations in which neither person revealed everything they knew. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for intelligent thrillers, controlled performances and stories whose apparent simplicity concealed something much darker underneath.

Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, Body Heat stars William Hurt as Ned Racine, an unsuccessful Florida lawyer whose judgement begins to unravel after he meets the beautiful and apparently unhappily married Matty Walker.

Played by Kathleen Turner in her film debut, Matty is confident, intelligent and fully aware of the effect she has on Ned. Their attraction quickly develops into an intense affair conducted beneath the suffocating heat of a Florida summer.

Matty tells Ned that her wealthy husband, Edmund, stands between them and the life they could have together. Desire gradually becomes conspiracy as Ned begins considering whether murder could provide the freedom and money they both appear to want.

Convinced that his legal knowledge will allow him to avoid suspicion, Ned helps construct what seems to be a carefully planned crime. Yet small inconsistencies begin appearing, and he slowly realises that the situation may never have been as simple as Matty allowed him to believe.

William Hurt gives Ned a compelling mixture of arrogance, desire and increasing panic, while Kathleen Turner delivers a remarkably assured performance filled with intelligence, restraint and ambiguity.

Richard Crenna, Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke add further depth to a story shaped by shifting loyalties, hidden motives and the dangerous belief that passion can excuse almost anything.

Kasdan draws upon classic film noir while giving the story a distinctly modern atmosphere. The oppressive heat, shadowed interiors and John Barry’s seductive score create a constant sense that every decision is leading towards consequences that can no longer be avoided.
