This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of socially conscious drama, exceptional performances and dialogue that felt lived rather than simply written. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Written by Alan Bleasdale, Boys from the Blackstuff follows a group of former tarmac workers struggling with unemployment, poverty and disappearing opportunities in Liverpool during the early 1980s.
The men once worked together laying roads, but the security and sense of purpose employment gave them have disappeared. Each responds differently to a system that expects them to continue looking for work while offering increasingly little hope that meaningful work can be found.
Bernard Hill gives a remarkable performance as Yosser Hughes, a proud and increasingly desperate father whose identity begins to collapse as he loses his job, confidence and control over his family life. His famous plea of "Gizza job" became one of British television's most recognisable lines, but the character's anger and vulnerability give it a far deeper meaning.
Michael Angelis, Tom Georgeson, Alan Igbon, Peter Kerrigan and Julie Walters form part of an ensemble confronting money, authority, masculinity, friendship and self respect with Bleasdale's characteristic mixture of humour and painful honesty.
