Captain Phillips Blu-ray
Tom Hanks stars in a tense maritime thriller where a routine cargo voyage becomes a terrifying struggle for survival after the ship is boarded by Somali pirates.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Paul Greengrass, Captain Phillips stars Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips, captain of the American cargo ship Maersk Alabama.
During a voyage around the Horn of Africa, the vessel is approached and boarded by Somali pirates, forcing Phillips and his crew into an increasingly dangerous confrontation far from immediate help.
Barkhad Abdi plays pirate leader Muse, whose tense exchanges with Phillips become central as control of the situation shifts and the possibility of a peaceful resolution begins to disappear.
Greengrass keeps the action immediate and tightly focused, using confined spaces and rapidly changing circumstances to build tension, while Hanks gives a restrained performance that captures the emotional impact of prolonged danger.
A gripping true-story thriller driven by tension, difficult decisions and two performances that keep the conflict intensely human.
