Come Back Little Sheba DVD 1952 Burt Lancaster Shirley Booth

A deeply human and emotionally raw drama about marriage, addiction and the painful distance between the lives people imagined and the lives they ultimately built.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who appreciated films that found drama in ordinary rooms, familiar routines and conversations in which the most important feelings were often left unspoken. His collection reflected a lifelong interest in powerful performances, intelligent writing and stories that understood the complexity of real people.

Directed by Daniel Mann and adapted from the acclaimed play by William Inge, Come Back, Little Sheba centres on Doc and Lola Delaney, a married couple living with the consequences of disappointment, lost opportunities and years of emotional distance.

Burt Lancaster plays Doc, a recovering alcoholic whose carefully controlled routine conceals deep resentment and regret. His attempts to rebuild his life are tested when the couple take in a young college student whose freedom and romantic possibilities remind him painfully of everything he believes he has lost.

Shirley Booth gives an extraordinary performance as Lola, a lonely and affectionate woman who fills her days with conversation, household routines and the continuing hope that her missing dog, Sheba, might one day return.

Booth’s performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, bringing tenderness, humour and quiet devastation to a character whose optimism cannot entirely hide her grief. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}

Restrained, intimate and painfully honest, the film draws its emotional force from small gestures and difficult silences rather than spectacle, creating a portrait of two people trying to find hope within the ruins of their shared past.

An important addition for collectors of classic American drama, Burt Lancaster performances, Oscar-winning cinema and distinguished adaptations of twentieth-century theatre.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… Lola spends the film calling for her missing dog while the humans avoid discussing several decades of unresolved feelings. Obviously, I immediately considered myself the most emotionally qualified person in the room. Quiet, heartbreaking and further proof that households function better when the dog is present.
