This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.

Directed by Mike Hodges, Croupier stars Clive Owen as Jack Manfred, an aspiring writer who reluctantly returns to work in a London casino. From behind the gaming table, Jack watches fortunes appear and disappear while maintaining the cool detachment expected of someone whose job is to observe rather than become involved.

Featuring Clive Owen and Gina McKee, the film gradually draws Jack deeper into the casino's closed world as temptation, secrecy and criminal opportunity begin to disturb the distance he believes he can maintain. Owen's restrained performance gives the story its distinctive tension, creating a character who remains difficult to read even as the risks around him continue to grow.
