Drop the Dead Donkey Season 1 DVD
A brilliantly sharp British newsroom comedy filled with egos, office politics and biting satire that remains remarkably relevant decades after its original broadcast.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the skill behind comedy that appears fast, effortless and completely chaotic. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for sharp dialogue, perfectly judged performances and writing that could make an audience laugh while exposing something uncomfortably true.
Created by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, Drop the Dead Donkey is set inside the offices of GlobeLink News, where journalists, executives and presenters attempt to cover major events while managing personal rivalries, corporate interference and their own considerable egos.
The first series introduces editor George Dent, ambitious executive Gus Hedges, reporters Damien Day and Alex Pates, newsreader Henry Davenport and the rest of a team whose behind-the-scenes behaviour is often more chaotic than the stories they are reporting.
Originally written and recorded close to transmission, the series incorporated topical events into its scripts, giving the newsroom satire an immediacy that helped it stand apart. Beneath the fast jokes and office arguments lies a sharp examination of media priorities, corporate influence and the uneasy relationship between news and entertainment.
This two-disc edition contains all ten episodes from the complete first series, together with the unaired pilot and additional interviews with the writers and cast.
An excellent addition for collectors of classic British comedy, Channel 4 television and intelligent satire driven by memorable characters and exceptionally sharp writing.
