Escape from New York Special Edition DVD
Kurt Russell stars as Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's dark dystopian thriller, where Manhattan has become a maximum-security prison and one dangerous rescue mission offers a chance at freedom.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed and co-written by John Carpenter, Escape from New York stars Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a former soldier and convicted criminal living in a bleak vision of the near future.
Manhattan has been transformed into a heavily guarded maximum-security prison. When Air Force One crashes inside the city and the President is taken hostage, Snake is offered a deal: enter Manhattan, bring the President back alive and earn his freedom.
With limited time to complete the mission, Snake moves through a ruined city filled with dangerous groups, uneasy alliances and people fighting for control of what remains.
Russell gives Snake a quiet, cynical authority that helped make the character one of cult cinema's most recognisable antiheroes, while Carpenter builds the film around atmosphere, tension and a stripped-back sense of danger.
A distinctive dystopian thriller with one of Kurt Russell's best-known performances and the unmistakable atmosphere of John Carpenter's early films.
