Hung, Drawn and Quartered by Jonathan J. Moore

A dark and thought-provoking history of execution, capital punishment and the changing relationship between justice, authority and public spectacle.

From Dad's Collection

This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine interest in the darker chapters of history, particularly the ways societies exercised authority and justified punishment. He was drawn to books that examined difficult subjects seriously and asked what systems of justice reveal about the cultures that created them. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each book now looking for a new home where it can continue to be read and appreciated.

Written by Jonathan J. Moore, Hung, Drawn and Quartered: The Story of Execution Through the Ages examines capital punishment from the ancient world through to more modern periods.

The book considers how methods of execution developed alongside political authority, religious belief, legal systems and public opinion, revealing how punishment could be used not only to take a life but also to demonstrate control and communicate the power of the state.

An unsettling but informative read for those interested in criminal justice, legal history, social control and the darker aspects of civilisation.

Arya's Approval
This is less about gruesome methods for their own sake and more about what punishment reveals about power, justice and the values of different societies. Disturbing in places, but historically revealing.
