Hung, Drawn, and Quartered: The Story of Execution Through the Ages
A dark, fascinating exploration of capital punishment and execution across history, examining how justice has been performed and justified across centuries.
Some items on Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Some are here because they meant something to my dad. He was an actor, a scriptwriter, and a serious collector of films and books that had something to say. This is one of those pieces.
This is history at its most uncomfortable, because it forces you to look at what societies have done in the name of punishment, deterrence, and public order. It traces the shift from execution as spectacle to execution as procedure, and the thinking that was used to defend it at each stage.
If you are interested in criminal justice history, darker social history, or the way power has been performed in public, this is a compelling and unsettling read.
