Adapted from the novels by Robert Graves, I, Claudius stars Derek Jacobi as Claudius, a physically disabled and underestimated member of Rome's imperial family who survives decades of conspiracy, cruelty and bloodshed by allowing those around him to believe he poses no threat.

Through Claudius's recollections, the series follows the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula as rival families compete for influence and succession. At the centre of much of the intrigue is Livia, played with chilling intelligence by Siân Phillips, whose determination to secure power for her son shapes the future of the Roman Empire.

John Hurt gives an extraordinary performance as the increasingly unstable Caligula, while Brian Blessed, Patrick Stewart, George Baker and Margaret Tyzack form part of an exceptional ensemble cast. The production relies on writing and performance rather than spectacle, allowing every alliance, betrayal and private calculation to carry real weight.
