If.... DVD
A bold and confrontational British classic in which rebellion erupts inside a rigid boarding school governed by tradition, privilege and unchecked authority.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the importance of character, dialogue and films willing to challenge their audience rather than follow familiar rules. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for fearless performances, distinctive directors and cinema that continued to provoke thought long after its original release.
Directed by Lindsay Anderson, If.... stars Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis, a rebellious pupil at a traditional English public school where younger boys are controlled by senior prefects and expected to accept humiliation, punishment and rigid discipline without question.
As the school’s ceremonies and routines continue around him, Mick becomes increasingly unwilling to submit to its rules. Together with two fellow pupils, he begins resisting the authority of the prefects and the wider institution they represent.
The film moves between social realism, dark humour and surreal imagery, gradually blurring the boundary between everyday experience and fantasy. Malcolm McDowell brings intelligence, defiance and unpredictability to a performance that established him as one of British cinema’s most distinctive actors.
An important addition for collectors of Lindsay Anderson films, Malcolm McDowell performances and rebellious British cinema exploring authority, privilege and resistance.
