This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Uli Edel and adapted from the novel by Hubert Selby Jr, Last Exit to Brooklyn follows a group of interconnected lives in a deprived working class neighbourhood where poverty, repression and a bitter factory strike shape almost every possibility for escape.
Featuring Jennifer Jason Leigh and Stephen Lang, the film confronts loneliness, sexuality, violence and exploitation without softening the brutality of Selby's world. Leigh gives a particularly powerful performance as Tralala, whose apparent toughness gradually reveals an increasingly vulnerable and tragic existence.
