Lilyhammer Season 1 DVD 3-Disc Set
Steven Van Zandt stars in an offbeat crime comedy about a New York mobster starting a new life in Norway without leaving his old habits behind.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Created by Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, Lilyhammer stars Steven Van Zandt as Frank Tagliano, a New York gangster who enters witness protection after testifying against a powerful mob boss.
Given the chance to choose a new home, Frank selects Lillehammer in Norway after remembering the town from the Winter Olympics. He arrives expecting a quiet fresh start and instead finds bureaucracy, unfamiliar customs and small-town life waiting for him.
Living under the name Giovanni Henriksen, Frank begins establishing himself in the local community. Whenever official procedures become inconvenient, however, he has a habit of returning to the intimidation, negotiation and creative rule-breaking that worked for him in New York.
Van Zandt gives Frank a dry, commanding presence, while the contrast between his criminal instincts and his Norwegian surroundings gives the series its unusual mix of crime drama and black comedy.
An entertaining crime series with an unusual setting, sharp culture-clash humour and a central character determined to do things his own way.
