Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the importance of character, dialogue and finding humour within unexpected situations. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for distinctive performances, intelligent writing and stories that offered something different from the usual formula.

Created by Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, Lilyhammer stars Steven Van Zandt as Frank Tagliano, a New York gangster who enters witness protection after testifying against a powerful mob boss.

Given the opportunity to choose a new home, Frank requests Lillehammer in Norway after remembering the town from its appearance during the 1994 Winter Olympics. He arrives expecting a peaceful fresh start but soon discovers that Norwegian bureaucracy, unfamiliar customs and small-town life present challenges of their own.

Adopting the name Giovanni Henriksen, Frank begins establishing himself within the local community. Yet whenever official procedures become inconvenient, he repeatedly falls back on the intimidation, negotiation and creative rule-breaking that served him in his previous life.

Steven Van Zandt gives Frank a dry, commanding presence, while the contrast between his criminal instincts and the calm surroundings of Lillehammer creates a sharp mixture of crime drama, cultural comedy and understated humour.

An entertaining addition for collectors of international television, dark comedy and character-led crime series with an unusual setting and a brilliantly offbeat personality.
