Lolita Stanley Kubrick Collection DVD
A deliberately uncomfortable Stanley Kubrick drama examining obsession, manipulation and the damage concealed behind one man's carefully controlled account of events.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the importance of character, dialogue and films willing to confront difficult subjects without offering comfortable answers. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for distinctive directors, complex performances and cinema that continued to provoke discussion long after its original release.
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and adapted from the novel by Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita stars James Mason as Humbert Humbert, a European academic who rents a room in the home of widow Charlotte Haze after arriving in New Hampshire.
Humbert becomes dangerously obsessed with Charlotte's teenage daughter Dolores, known as Lolita. He marries Charlotte to remain close to the girl, beginning a pattern of deception, coercion and control whose consequences shape the rest of the story.
Shelley Winters gives Charlotte a mixture of vulnerability, longing and emotional intensity, while Peter Sellers brings unpredictability to the mysterious playwright Clare Quilty. Sue Lyon portrays Dolores as a young person caught within the manipulations and desires of the adults around her.
Kubrick approaches the material through dark satire, psychological tension and an unreliable central perspective. Rather than treating Humbert's obsession as romantic, the story reveals his self-serving narration and the harm created by his attempts to possess and control another person.
A significant addition for collectors of Stanley Kubrick films, literary adaptations and challenging psychological cinema examining obsession, exploitation and moral self-deception.
