Marathon Man DVD

Dustin Hoffman stars in a gripping conspiracy thriller where an ordinary graduate student is pulled into a violent world of secrets, betrayal and psychological terror.

From Dad's Collection

This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.

Directed by John Schlesinger and adapted by William Goldman from his own novel, Marathon Man stars Dustin Hoffman as Thomas “Babe” Levy, a history graduate student and dedicated long-distance runner living in New York.

Babe believes his older brother Doc, played by Roy Scheider, works in the oil industry. In reality, Doc is involved in covert intelligence work connected to Christian Szell, a former Nazi dentist attempting to recover a valuable cache of diamonds.

When Doc's secret life collides with Babe's seemingly ordinary existence, Babe is dragged into a conspiracy he barely understands and forced to work out who he can trust while trying to stay alive.

Laurence Olivier gives Szell a chilling combination of politeness and cruelty, while Hoffman makes Babe's confusion and fear feel immediate as the danger closes in around him.

A tense 1970s thriller built around paranoia, betrayal and one of cinema's most unsettling villains.

Arya's Approval

Babe starts out worrying about university and running, then somehow ends up trapped in an international conspiracy involving diamonds, secret agents and one deeply alarming dentist. I will be reviewing all future dental appointments very carefully.
