Directed by John Schlesinger and adapted by William Goldman from his own novel, Marathon Man stars Dustin Hoffman as Thomas “Babe” Levy, a history graduate student and dedicated long-distance runner living in New York City.

Babe believes his older brother Doc, played by Roy Scheider, works in the oil industry. In reality, Doc is involved with a covert government organisation and has been monitoring Christian Szell, a former Nazi dentist attempting to recover a valuable cache of diamonds.

When Doc’s secret life collides with Babe’s seemingly ordinary existence, Babe is pulled into a violent conspiracy he does not understand. Captured and interrogated by Szell, he must survive using little more than his endurance, instincts and determination.

Laurence Olivier gives Szell a chilling combination of politeness, calculation and cruelty, while Hoffman makes Babe’s confusion and fear feel painfully immediate. The film builds its suspense through paranoia, uncertainty and the constant possibility that anyone may be hiding the truth.
