Mona Lisa DVD

A gritty and deeply affecting British crime drama driven by an outstanding Bob Hoskins performance and a journey through the darker corners of 1980s London.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the importance of character, dialogue and the emotions hidden beneath what people choose to say. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for powerful performances and films that found humanity within complicated and often uncomfortable worlds.

Directed by Neil Jordan, Mona Lisa stars Bob Hoskins as George, a small-time criminal attempting to rebuild his life after being released from prison. His former employer Mortwell, played by Michael Caine, arranges work for him as the chauffeur of a high-class escort named Simone.

George and Simone initially appear to have very little in common, but their uneasy working relationship gradually develops into something more complex. When Simone asks for his help finding a missing young woman, George is drawn further into a dangerous world of exploitation, violence and betrayal.

Bob Hoskins gives the film warmth, vulnerability and explosive energy, while Cathy Tyson brings intelligence and mystery to Simone. Michael Caine provides a chilling presence as Mortwell, with Robbie Coltrane offering moments of friendship and humour within an increasingly tense story.

An excellent addition for collectors of British crime cinema, Neil Jordan films and character-led dramas exploring love, loyalty, exploitation and the possibility of redemption.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… George has left prison, accepted one seemingly straightforward driving job and immediately become involved in several layers of criminal disaster. I monitored the situation closely, but nobody requested my professional supervision until it was far too late.
