Monty Python's Life of Brian Digitally Remastered DVD
A fearless and endlessly quotable British comedy following one thoroughly ordinary man whose repeated attempts to explain that he is not the Messiah only make matters considerably worse.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the intelligence, timing and complete commitment required to make absurd comedy work. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for sharp writing, memorable performances and films capable of finding humour within politics, authority and the strange behaviour of crowds.
Directed by Terry Jones, Monty Python's Life of Brian stars Graham Chapman as Brian Cohen, a young man born in Bethlehem on the same night and only a short distance away from Jesus.
Growing up under Roman occupation, Brian becomes involved with the People's Front of Judea, a revolutionary group whose plans are repeatedly delayed by arguments, rival organisations and its own considerable incompetence.
After Brian is mistaken for a religious leader, an increasingly devoted crowd begins following him and interpreting everything he says as a sign. His desperate insistence that they should think for themselves is immediately accepted as another command from their new Messiah.
John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones appear in numerous roles, filling the story with Roman officials, argumentative revolutionaries, enthusiastic followers and people who seem remarkably determined to misunderstand one another.
Behind the absurdity is a sharp satire of political division, unquestioning devotion and the human tendency to surrender independent thought to anyone who appears confident enough to lead.
An essential addition for collectors of Monty Python, classic British comedy and intelligent satire that remains bold, chaotic and remarkably relevant decades after its original release.
