Patton DVD

A commanding Second World War drama built around George C. Scott’s towering portrayal of one of military history’s most brilliant, controversial and uncompromising leaders.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how a truly commanding performance could hold the centre of an enormous production. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for powerful character studies, intelligent historical drama and films willing to explore the contradictions behind celebrated public figures.

Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, Patton stars George C. Scott as General George S. Patton, the fiercely ambitious American commander whose military brilliance was matched by an explosive temperament and absolute conviction in his own destiny.

The film follows Patton through the Allied campaigns in North Africa and Europe, tracing his victories, rivalries and repeated conflicts with the political and military expectations surrounding him.

Patton inspires extraordinary loyalty through courage, discipline and confidence, yet his lack of restraint repeatedly threatens his career. His contempt for diplomacy and fierce treatment of those under his command reveal a leader whose greatest strengths are inseparable from his most damaging flaws.

Karl Malden provides a thoughtful contrast as General Omar Bradley, whose quieter and more measured leadership highlights the force of Patton’s personality. The film combines large-scale battle sequences with an absorbing examination of ego, duty, ambition and the complicated nature of military leadership.

An important addition for collectors of classic war cinema, George C. Scott performances and historical dramas that look beyond military victory to examine the complex personality of the person in command.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… Patton enters every room as though the entire war effort has been waiting for him personally. He is brilliant, impossible, dramatic and entirely unfamiliar with the concept of lowering his voice. An extraordinary performance, although the staff complaints file must have been enormous.
