Pretty in Pink DVD
Molly Ringwald stars in a much-loved 1980s coming-of-age story about first love, friendship and the pressure of being judged by where you come from.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Howard Deutch and written by John Hughes, Pretty in Pink stars Molly Ringwald as Andie Walsh, a creative teenager navigating school, family life and the social divide between the wealthy students around her and the world she comes from.
Things become more complicated when Andie begins a relationship with Blane, played by Andrew McCarthy. Their different backgrounds place them under pressure from people around them, forcing both to decide how much those expectations should matter.
Alongside the central romance is Andie's friendship with Duckie, played by Jon Cryer, whose humour and loyalty hide feelings he struggles to express. Harry Dean Stanton brings warmth to Andie's father, while James Spader gives the film one of its most memorable antagonists.
With its distinctive fashion, memorable soundtrack and emotionally messy relationships, the film captures the awkwardness of growing up without pretending that love, friendship or social pressure are ever simple.
A classic 1980s coming-of-age film built around friendship, class differences, first love and one of Molly Ringwald's best-known performances.
