Pretty in Pink DVD
A much-loved 1980s coming-of-age story about first love, loyal friendship and the painful pressure of feeling judged by where you come from.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood that the most memorable coming-of-age stories are not simply about romance. They are about character, belonging and the moments when young people begin deciding who they want to be. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for honest performances, distinctive writing and films whose emotions remained recognisable long after their original release.
Directed by Howard Deutch and written by John Hughes, Pretty in Pink stars Molly Ringwald as Andie Walsh, an intelligent and creative teenager living with her unemployed father on the less affluent side of town.
Andie is used to being judged by the wealthy students at her school, but her life becomes more complicated when she begins a relationship with Blane, played by Andrew McCarthy. His friends disapprove of their different backgrounds, leaving both of them under pressure to decide whether their feelings matter more than the expectations surrounding them.
Alongside the central romance is Andie’s friendship with Duckie, played by Jon Cryer, whose humour and devotion hide feelings he struggles to express. Harry Dean Stanton brings warmth and vulnerability to Andie’s father, while James Spader gives the film one of its most memorable and deeply unpleasant antagonists.
With its distinctive fashion, memorable soundtrack and emotionally complicated relationships, the film captures the excitement and embarrassment of being young without pretending that love, friendship or social pressure are ever simple.
A wonderful addition for collectors of John Hughes films, Molly Ringwald performances and thoughtful 1980s cinema exploring class, identity, friendship and the courage required to remain true to yourself.
