QB VII Complete 2-Disc DVD

A compelling courtroom drama in which a celebrated doctor’s reputation is placed against testimony concerning crimes committed inside a Nazi concentration camp.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how serious drama could be built through language, testimony and the gradual exposure of truths that people had spent years attempting to conceal. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for powerful performances, morally complex writing and stories that asked difficult questions without reducing them to easy answers.

Directed by Tom Gries and adapted from the novel by Leon Uris, QB VII stars Ben Gazzara as American author Abraham Cady and Anthony Hopkins as Dr Adam Kelno, a respected physician and survivor of a Nazi concentration camp.

After the war, Kelno rebuilds his life, earns international recognition for his medical work and is eventually knighted. His public reputation is threatened when Cady publishes a novel accusing a fictionalised doctor of carrying out forced medical procedures on Jewish prisoners during the Holocaust.

Believing the character to be based upon him, Kelno brings a libel case against Cady in a British courtroom identified as Queen’s Bench VII. The resulting trial forces both men to confront evidence, witnesses and memories connected to events that had remained buried for decades.

John Gielgud, Anthony Quayle, Lee Remick, Leslie Caron and Jack Hawkins form part of an exceptional ensemble cast. The drama develops patiently, using testimony and character rather than spectacle to examine truth, responsibility, reputation and the lasting consequences of historical crimes.

An important addition for collectors of classic television, courtroom drama and serious historical storytelling led by commanding performances from Anthony Hopkins and Ben Gazzara.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… this is a serious and absorbing drama in which every piece of testimony carries enormous weight. It asks difficult questions about truth, responsibility and whether a respected public reputation can ever erase the past. I watched this one carefully and without the usual dramatic interruptions.
