This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of cinema, carefully measured performances and filmmakers who understood the power of atmosphere and suspense. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Shadow of a Doubt stars Teresa Wright as Charlotte "Charlie" Newton, a restless young woman living with her family in the peaceful Californian town of Santa Rosa.
Her boredom disappears when her sophisticated and much admired Uncle Charlie, played by Joseph Cotten, arrives for an unexpected visit. His charm immediately wins over the household, particularly the niece who shares his name and has always felt a special connection with him.
That excitement begins to change when investigators arrive asking questions about a murderer known as the Merry Widow Killer. Small details in Uncle Charlie's behaviour begin to appear less innocent, forcing young Charlie to consider the possibility that the relative she idolises may be hiding something horrifying.
Hitchcock places danger within familiar surroundings, using family meals, quiet streets and respectable small town life to create unease. Joseph Cotten balances charm with concealed menace, while Teresa Wright gives Charlie intelligence and courage as suspicion gradually becomes certainty.
Presented in black and white, the film features a screenplay by Thornton Wilder, Sally Benson and Alma Reville, with Macdonald Carey, Patricia Collinge, Henry Travers and Hume Cronyn among the supporting cast.
An excellent addition for collectors of Alfred Hitchcock, classic psychological thrillers and beautifully controlled suspense where danger comes from someone already trusted.
