Shadow of a Doubt The Hitchcock Collection DVD
A masterfully controlled Alfred Hitchcock thriller in which the arrival of a much-loved uncle gradually turns an ordinary family home into a place of suspicion, fear and psychological danger.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how tension could be created without noise or spectacle. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for carefully measured performances, intelligent dialogue and films in which the smallest change in behaviour could reveal that something was terribly wrong.
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Shadow of a Doubt stars Teresa Wright as Charlotte “Charlie” Newton, a restless young woman living with her family in the peaceful Californian town of Santa Rosa.
Charlie’s boredom disappears when her sophisticated and much-admired Uncle Charlie, played by Joseph Cotten, arrives for an unexpected visit. His charm and worldly confidence immediately brighten the household, particularly for the niece who shares his name and has always felt a special connection with him.
That excitement begins to change when two investigators arrive asking questions about a murderer known as the Merry Widow Killer. Small details in Uncle Charlie’s behaviour gradually appear less innocent, forcing young Charlie to consider the possibility that the relative she idolises may be hiding something horrifying.
Hitchcock places danger inside the familiar surroundings of family meals, quiet streets and respectable small-town life. Joseph Cotten balances warmth with concealed menace, while Teresa Wright gives Charlie intelligence, courage and a growing awareness that confronting the truth may place everyone she loves at risk.
An essential addition for collectors of Alfred Hitchcock, classic psychological thrillers and beautifully controlled suspense in which evil arrives not as a stranger, but as a trusted member of the family.
