The Four Feathers DVD

A sweeping Technicolor adventure following a young officer whose reputation is shattered by accusations of cowardice, sending him on a dangerous personal journey to recover his honour.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how character could be revealed through difficult choices, private fear and the pressure created by other people’s expectations. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for strong performances, ambitious filmmaking and stories examining the complicated relationship between courage, reputation and personal conviction.

Directed by Zoltan Korda and adapted from the novel by A. E. W. Mason, The Four Feathers stars John Clements as Harry Faversham, a young British Army officer whose regiment is ordered to serve during the Sudan campaign.

Fearing that he lacks the courage expected of him, Harry resigns his commission shortly before the regiment departs. Three fellow officers send him white feathers as symbols of cowardice, while a fourth is given to him by his fiancée, Ethne, leaving his reputation and closest relationships in ruins.

Determined to prove that his decision did not define him, Harry travels to the Sudan in disguise. Working alone and facing considerable danger, he attempts to help each of the men who condemned him, returning the feathers one by one through acts of loyalty and bravery.

Ralph Richardson brings warmth and dignity to Captain John Durrance, while June Duprez portrays Ethne as a woman caught between affection, disappointment and the rigid expectations of the society surrounding her.

Filmed in vivid early Technicolor, the production combines sweeping desert landscapes and large-scale action with a character-led story about fear, judgement and the desire to reclaim a damaged sense of self.

A notable addition for collectors of classic British cinema, early Technicolor productions and historical adventures exploring courage, honour, loyalty and redemption.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… Harry receives four feathers, loses everyone’s confidence and decides the only reasonable response is to travel across a desert proving them all wrong individually. Dramatic, extremely complicated and far more effort than simply arranging a serious conversation, but undeniably committed.
