The Long Good Friday DVD
A landmark British crime thriller driven by Bob Hoskins' commanding performance, sharp writing and a steadily tightening sense that a carefully built criminal empire is beginning to collapse.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of cinema, exceptional performances and crime dramas where dialogue, character and atmosphere carried as much weight as the action. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by John Mackenzie and written by Barrie Keeffe, The Long Good Friday stars Bob Hoskins as Harold Shand, a powerful London criminal attempting to reinvent himself as a legitimate international businessman.
Harold plans to redevelop London's Docklands with backing from American organised crime, believing the project will secure his future. During one crucial weekend, however, unexplained attacks begin striking at the heart of his organisation and the carefully arranged deal starts to unravel.
As Harold desperately tries to identify who is responsible, the limits of his influence become increasingly clear. Helen Mirren brings intelligence and composure to Victoria, his partner, while the supporting cast includes Eddie Constantine, Dave King, Bryan Marshall, Derek Thompson and Pierce Brosnan.
Bob Hoskins gives an extraordinary performance filled with authority, rage, vulnerability and wounded pride, culminating in a celebrated final sequence where his expression communicates more than dialogue ever could.
An essential addition for collectors of British crime cinema, Bob Hoskins performances and tightly written thrillers exploring ambition, loyalty, betrayal and the dangerous limits of power.
