The Long Good Friday DVD
A landmark British crime thriller driven by Bob Hoskins’ commanding performance, sharp writing and a steadily tightening sense that a carefully built empire is beginning to collapse.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how tension could be created through controlled dialogue, physical presence and everything left unsaid between characters. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for exceptional performances, intelligent crime writing and films in which every choice carried consequences.
Directed by John Mackenzie and written by Barrie Keeffe, The Long Good Friday stars Bob Hoskins as Harold Shand, a powerful London criminal attempting to transform himself into a legitimate international businessman.
Harold plans to redevelop London’s Docklands with financial backing from American organised crime. He believes the project will secure his future and place him among the city’s most influential figures, but the carefully arranged deal begins to unravel during a single violent weekend.
A series of unexplained attacks strikes at the heart of Harold’s organisation. His associates are murdered, businesses are bombed and nobody appears willing to explain who is responsible or why his empire has suddenly become a target.
Determined to restore control before his American investors lose confidence, Harold moves through London questioning allies and threatening enemies. Yet the harder he pushes, the more clearly it becomes that he may be confronting forces he does not fully understand.
Helen Mirren brings intelligence and composure to Victoria, Harold’s partner, whose political awareness and social confidence make her essential to his ambitions. Their relationship gives the film added depth, revealing the personal loyalty and shared purpose beneath Harold’s increasingly desperate struggle for control.
Bob Hoskins delivers a remarkable performance filled with authority, rage, vulnerability and wounded pride. The film’s celebrated final sequence relies almost entirely on his expression, allowing Harold’s understanding of events to unfold without dialogue.
An essential addition for collectors of British crime cinema, Bob Hoskins performances and tightly written thrillers examining ambition, loyalty, betrayal and the dangerous limits of power.
