The Panic in Needle Park DVD
A bleak and uncompromising American drama starring Al Pacino and Kitty Winn as a young couple whose relationship becomes consumed by heroin addiction.
This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of world cinema, independent film and memorable performances. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Jerry Schatzberg, The Panic in Needle Park follows Helen, played by Kitty Winn, whose relationship with Bobby draws her into a world of heroin addiction, dealing and desperation around New York's Sherman Square.
Al Pacino plays Bobby with a mixture of charm, volatility and self-deception in one of his earliest major film roles. As addiction takes greater control of their lives, affection and loyalty are steadily overtaken by dependency, suspicion and the constant need for the next dose.
Shot with a stark, almost documentary-like realism, the film does not romanticise its subject. Its focus remains firmly on the people caught inside addiction and the damage it causes to relationships, trust and any sense of stability.
A hard-hitting early Al Pacino performance in a serious character-led drama about addiction, love and survival.
