Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how tension could be created through atmosphere, uncertainty and the gradual removal of every safe choice available to a character. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for films that placed ordinary people under extraordinary pressure and examined what fear could reveal about them.

Directed by Cosimo Alemà, War Games follows a group of friends who travel into the countryside to spend the day taking part in a recreational combat game.

Armed with imitation weapons and expecting nothing more dangerous than competition between friends, they enter an isolated landscape where communication and help are already difficult to reach.

Their game changes completely when they discover a remote building and cross paths with three paranoid former soldiers. What began as staged combat becomes frighteningly real as the group is hunted through unfamiliar territory by men who appear to view violence as entertainment.

Separated, frightened and increasingly uncertain whom they can trust, the friends are forced to abandon the rules of the game and confront the possibility that their attackers have no intention of allowing them to leave.

The film builds its tension through isolation, pursuit and the contrast between simulated danger and genuine brutality. The woodland setting becomes steadily more threatening as panic replaces excitement and every decision carries potentially fatal consequences.

Stephanie Chapman-Baker, Sam Cohan, Valene Kane, Neil Linpow and Andrew Harwood Mills lead the ensemble cast.
