Set within a disturbing vision of the near future, the film follows Alex DeLarge, played by Malcolm McDowell, a charismatic and deeply violent young man whose crimes eventually bring him into contact with an experimental programme designed to remove his capacity for violence.
What follows raises unsettling questions about punishment, state control, morality and whether goodness has any meaning when a person is no longer free to choose between right and wrong.
Kubrick combines striking imagery, classical music, dark satire and psychological intensity to create a film that remains deliberately uncomfortable. It does not offer easy answers or ask the viewer to feel safe, which is precisely why it has remained such a significant and widely discussed work of cinema.
