Made in Britain Special Edition DVD
A raw and confrontational British drama powered by an extraordinary early Tim Roth performance and an unflinching examination of anger, racism and social alienation.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood the importance of character, dialogue and performances willing to expose the most difficult parts of human behaviour. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for fearless actors, socially conscious writing and dramas that challenged their audience rather than offering easy answers.
Directed by Alan Clarke and written by David Leland, Made in Britain stars Tim Roth as Trevor, an intelligent but violently rebellious teenage skinhead moving through Britain’s youth justice and social care systems.
Trevor rejects almost every attempt to help or control him. His anger is directed towards authority, society and anyone who challenges his deeply entrenched racist beliefs, while his intelligence makes him painfully aware of the systems he is fighting against.
Social workers and staff attempt to confront the consequences of his behaviour, but Trevor repeatedly sabotages every possible route away from destruction. Tim Roth gives the character a frightening energy, combining aggression, intelligence and vulnerability in a performance that established him as a remarkable screen presence.
Filmed with a direct, documentary-like immediacy, the drama avoids sentimentality and refuses to excuse Trevor’s racism or violence. Instead, it presents a deeply uncomfortable portrait of alienation, institutional failure and a young man determined to reject every opportunity placed before him.
An important addition for collectors of Alan Clarke’s work, Tim Roth performances and uncompromising British social drama that remains disturbing, urgent and difficult to forget.
