Directed by Miloš Forman and adapted from the novel by Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest stars Jack Nicholson as Randle Patrick McMurphy, a rebellious prisoner transferred to a psychiatric hospital for assessment.

McMurphy enters the ward believing that life there will be easier than completing his sentence in prison. He quickly discovers an institution governed by strict routines and the quiet but absolute authority of Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher.

Refusing to accept the ward’s restrictions without challenge, McMurphy encourages the other patients to question the rules surrounding them. His humour, confidence and open defiance begin changing the atmosphere of the institution, giving several of the men a renewed sense of independence.

What begins as a battle of wills gradually becomes something far more serious. Nurse Ratched maintains control through routine, humiliation and psychological pressure, while McMurphy becomes increasingly determined to resist her authority regardless of the consequences.

Nicholson gives McMurphy energy, humour and vulnerability, while Fletcher’s restrained performance makes Nurse Ratched’s authority all the more unsettling. The supporting cast includes William Redfield, Brad Dourif, Will Sampson, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd and Scatman Crothers.

The film won the five principal Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Its lasting power comes not only from its conflict between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched, but from its wider examination of freedom, conformity and the human need to retain some control over one’s own identity.
