Rising Damp Complete Collection 5-Disc DVD Box Set
The complete collection of one of Britain’s sharpest and most memorable sitcoms, bringing together every television episode and the feature film across five DVDs.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood that comedy depended on timing, character and dialogue that sounded effortless even when every word had been carefully judged. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for distinctive performers, beautifully observed writing and British television comedy that remained funny long after its original broadcast.
Created by Eric Chappell, Rising Damp centres on Rupert Rigsby, the miserly, interfering and deeply prejudiced landlord of a shabby Victorian boarding house.
Leonard Rossiter gives Rigsby an unforgettable mixture of arrogance, insecurity and misplaced confidence. Constantly attempting to control the lives of his tenants, he usually succeeds only in exposing his own vanity and desperation.
Among those living under his roof are the intelligent and self-assured Philip, played by Don Warrington; the nervous medical student Alan, played by Richard Beckinsale; and the romantic Miss Jones, portrayed by Frances de la Tour.
Rigsby’s hopeless pursuit of Miss Jones, jealousy of Philip and constant intrusion into his tenants’ affairs create a stream of misunderstandings, failed schemes and painfully awkward encounters.
Much of the programme’s humour comes from the contrast between Rigsby’s exaggerated view of himself and the reality recognised by everyone around him. Rossiter’s physical comedy and rapid delivery are matched by a cast who give each uncomfortable silence and cutting response precisely the right weight.
This complete collection includes all four television series, the Christmas special and the feature-length film, allowing the characters and their increasingly complicated domestic battles to be enjoyed from beginning to end.
A brilliant addition for collectors of classic British comedy, Leonard Rossiter performances and character-led sitcoms built on exceptional writing, social awkwardness and perfectly timed irritation.
