Strangers on a Train 2-Disc Special Edition DVD

A brilliantly controlled Alfred Hitchcock thriller in which one chance meeting and a seemingly casual conversation become the beginning of a terrifying agreement that only one man believes was ever made.

Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.

Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who understood how tension could grow from dialogue, performance and the unsettling possibility that one person has interpreted an ordinary exchange very differently from everyone else. His collection reflected a lifelong appreciation for beautifully constructed thrillers, memorable characters and stories in which politeness could conceal something deeply dangerous.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and adapted from the novel by Patricia Highsmith, Strangers on a Train stars Farley Granger as successful tennis player Guy Haines, who meets the charming but disturbing Bruno Antony during a train journey.

After learning that Guy is trapped in an unhappy marriage, Bruno suggests what he considers the perfect crime. Each man will murder someone on behalf of the other, leaving no obvious motive and no connection for the police to follow.

Guy dismisses the conversation as the fantasy of a stranger, but Bruno does not. When Guy's wife is murdered, Bruno begins demanding that Guy fulfil his supposed part of their agreement by killing Bruno's father.

Robert Walker gives Bruno a chilling mixture of charm, entitlement and instability, creating a villain whose calm confidence makes him increasingly frightening. Farley Granger captures Guy's growing panic as his career, relationships and freedom become threatened by a crime he neither requested nor committed.

Hitchcock builds the suspense through visual parallels, tightening moral pressure and unforgettable set pieces, including the escalating confrontation on a fairground carousel. What begins as an apparently harmless encounter becomes a study of manipulation, obsession and the consequences of being drawn into another person's fantasy.

An essential addition for collectors of Alfred Hitchcock, Patricia Highsmith adaptations and classic psychological thrillers in which one polite conversation gradually becomes impossible to escape.

Arya's Approval
Right darlings… one polite train conversation and Bruno has apparently arranged an entire murder agreement that Guy absolutely did not accept. The warning signs were immediate, the personal boundaries were nonexistent and I distrusted that man before the train had reached the next station.
