This copy comes from my dad's personal collection. Dad was an actor and scriptwriter with a genuine love of ambitious filmmaking, exceptional performances and stories where quiet conversations could carry enormous dramatic weight. His collection remains an important part of Kate's Treasures15, with each title now looking for a new home where it can continue to be appreciated.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and developed from the work of Mario Puzo, The Godfather introduces the Corleone family, one of New York's most powerful organised crime dynasties.
Marlon Brando stars as Don Vito Corleone, a respected and feared patriarch whose influence depends upon loyalty, obligation and carefully exercised power. His youngest son Michael, played by Al Pacino, initially attempts to remain outside the family business before becoming increasingly drawn into its violence and responsibilities.
The Godfather Part II moves between Michael's increasingly isolated leadership and the early life of his father, portrayed as a young man by Robert De Niro. The parallel stories show how one generation created the family's power while another struggles to preserve it at enormous personal cost.
The Godfather Part III follows an older Michael attempting to make the Corleone family legitimate and repair some of the damage created by decades of violence, only to become caught in new conflicts involving money, influence and the ambitions of another generation.
Across the trilogy, Coppola combines intimate family drama with an expansive examination of organised crime and inherited responsibility. Diane Keaton, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale, Talia Shire and Andy Garcia form part of an exceptional supporting cast.
