The Wind in the Willows 1983 Digitally Restored DVD
A beautifully gentle stop-motion adaptation filled with friendship, humour and the comforting magic of life beside the riverbank.
Some treasures at Kate's Treasures15 are chosen because they are beautiful or useful. Others are here because they belonged to my dad and formed part of a collection shaped by his genuine love of cinema, unforgettable performances and the craft of filmmaking.
Dad was an actor and scriptwriter who appreciated storytelling built through character, atmosphere and carefully observed human behaviour. His collection included films whose apparent simplicity concealed remarkable craftsmanship, memorable performances and stories capable of speaking to different generations.
Produced by Cosgrove Hall and directed by Mark Hall, this much-loved 1983 adaptation brings Kenneth Grahame’s classic story to life through beautifully detailed stop-motion animation.
When the gentle and curious Mole leaves his spring cleaning behind, he discovers the riverbank and forms a lasting friendship with the dependable Rat. Their peaceful world soon expands to include the wise Badger and the wealthy, impulsive and endlessly enthusiastic Mr Toad.
Toad’s latest obsession with motorcars leads him into increasing trouble, threatening both his freedom and the future of Toad Hall. His friends must work together to protect their home while attempting to persuade Toad that enthusiasm without judgement can carry serious consequences.
David Jason gives Toad a wonderful mixture of confidence, mischief and complete lack of restraint, while Richard Pearson, Michael Hordern and Ian Carmichael bring warmth and character to Mole, Badger and Rat.
The film balances gentle humour and adventure with a deep sense of friendship, loyalty and home. Its handcrafted animation, richly textured sets and expressive characters give the riverbank a timeless atmosphere that remains comforting and distinctive.
A delightful addition for collectors of classic British animation, Cosgrove Hall productions and timeless family storytelling filled with warmth, wit and beautifully created characters.
